How do you have a mechanic check a used car before you even purchase it?
September 27, 2008 - We're doing tons of research before we buy this used car, and what keeps popping up is have a mechanic inspect the car before you buy it, and run a background car check. We just ran the background on the car, and it has perfect history.
But how do you get the car off the lot and have an independent mechanic check the car before you even buy it? How do you ask a car salesman if you can do that?
do one of two things just flat out ask them if you can take the car to your mechanic for inspection if they wont let then dont buy the car. you can also have a mechanic come with you and lok the car over. being a mechanic myself has been a good tool for my family whne they are thinking about purchasing a new vehicle when my sister bought her car i was able to get about 1000 dollars off the price of the car just by pointing out small things that may require attention in the future. if you dont have a trusted mechanic let me ask you why you dont? i mean a mechanic is kinda like a docotr and using the smae mechanic will build the relationship over time and will help to curry favor from him later on when i worked for an independent shop i did quite a few mechanic inspections for people i would check brakes tires fluids belts body function of all systems and run a quick computer check as well as writing out anything i found on the vehicle i would then give the person my personal reccomendation of if they should buy the vehicle
just tell them you are very interested in the car but you want your mechanic to check it over first most salesmen have no prob with this and will lend you the dealer plate as long as you have arrangments made with your mechanic if they will not do thisthere is more than likely a reason and walk away and keep looking
- Just ask...they may have some conditions in order to protect their interest, like a deposit or conditional sale order. If they absolutely refuse, maybe you should try another dealer.
- Take it for a test drive to your mechanic.
- Just ask. Most will accommodate.
- Call up your mechanic to see if he is busy, take the car for a test drive, and have him throw it up in the air, and check everything.
- You tell them you wish to have an inspection done prior to purchase. You will need to make an appointment with a shop you trust to perform the inspection and be prepared to pay about $50 to $75 (or more). If you are considering spending a lot on the car, it is a wise investment.
